Keepsake Ornament

Handprint ornaments make the best keepsakes. Pulling the decorations out year after year and seeing just how tiny my kids hands were way back when makes me smile. These ornaments are super easy and work well with hands or feet.

You will need:
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 cup salt
  • 1 cup water
  • ribbon
1. Put the salt and flour into a mixing bowl and add water.

2. Mix the ingredients well. The dough should be firm.

3. Knead the dough until it's smooth. Pull a piece off and roll it into a ball.

4. With a rolling pin roll the dough into a circle about a 1/2 inch thick.

5. Press your child's hand into the dough.

6. Poke 2 holes in the top of the ornament.

7. Bake in a 200 degree oven for 2-3 hours. Remove from the oven and allow it to cool. Add a ribbon to hang it and you have the perfect keepsake ornament.

  7. I need to do this with my son. My mom did something similar but traced our hands on plates. She added our names and date on the plates. Then she hung them on ribbon and gave them to my grandparents.

  9. Oh no! So sorry it didn't work for you. The only thing I can say is that we really pressed the hand deep into the dough to make a good impression. Other than that, I'm not sure I can offer any other advice.

  15. It's a little late to do this with my kids, but grandkids probably aren't too far off. I'll have to remember this and help my kids create the keepsakes they'll want someday.

    Thanks. It's a beautiful idea.

    1. I've never had that problem, so I'm not sure how to fix it. Perhaps it needs to bake a little longer. I wish I could be more helpful! :)
