Fruity Play Dough

We go through a lot of play dough here at the Adams' house! Stella has just now really started getting into playing with it (without eating it) so I have been pulling it out almost daily for her. This recipe has a great fruity scent and is super easy to make!

  •  1 cup all purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon vegetable oil
  • 1 pack of unsweetened Kool-Aid.
Combine all the ingredients in a saucepan and heat over medium heat (stirring constantly) until it reaches the consistency of mashed potatoes. Remove from heat. When it's cool enough to handle, knead it on a floured surface. Now it's ready to play with! Just store it in a covered container so it doesn't dry out.

An Oldie But Goodie-Oatmeal Play Clay

This is a super easy play clay to make that has an interesting texture. I love trying different clay recipes and this was one the girls enjoyed because it was different.
What you will need to make it:
1/2 cup flour
1/2 water
1 cup oatmeal
Combine all the ingredients in a bowl. Stir until smooth. Add more flour if it's too sticky. Place the dough on a floured surface and knead for a few minutes. Store it in an airtight container.

An Oldie But Goodie-Pumpkin Pie Play Dough

This play dough recipe is a must for fall! It just smells so good!

You will need:
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 cup salt
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 tbsp. vegetable oil
  • 1 tbsp. cream of tartar
  • 2 tbsp pumpkin pie spice (of course I had none, so I just made a mixture of cinnamon, cloves, and ginger)
  • red and yellow food coloring
Combine all the ingredients in a medium saucepan and stir over medium-low heat. Continue to stir until the mixtures reaches the consistency of mashed potatoes. Remove it from the heat and knead it when it's cool enough to handle. (This is the best part! I love kneading the warm dough, especially when it smells so good!) Store in an air tight container.

We made a few pumpkins by adding some leaves and stems cut from pipe cleaners. Madelyn also just rolled out the dough and made some pumpkin "cookies".

Chocolate Play Dough

A few years ago I found this recipe around Valentine's Day and I continue to make it every year. It smells so good! Good enough to eat, but I know it doesn't taste as good as it smells!

{Here is the recipe}
1 1/4 cups flour
1/2 cup cocoa powder
1/2 cup salt
1/2 Tablespoon cream of Tartar
1/2 Tablespoon oil
1 1/2 cups water

Mix dry ingredients in a medium size saucepan. Add wet ingredients and stir together over low heat until a ball of dough forms. Remove play dough from the saucepan and knead by hand until dough is smooth and evenly colored. Store in an airtight container.

Glistening Snow Play Dough

Around here, we love snow. However, we have had no snow to speak of since Thanksgiving Day. It's kind of a bummer. We really were hoping for a white Christmas and that just did not happen. But, we are not letting our lack of the real thing get us down. Today we made snowmen with our favorite play dough recipe that I added a bit of glitter to to give it some sparkle!
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup salt
1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
1 cup water
1 teaspoon vegetable oil
silver glitter

Mix the flour, salt, cream of tartar, water, and oil in a saucepan. Cook over medium heat until it holds together like mashed potatoes. Remove from heat and allow to cool for a few minutes. When the dough is cool enough to touch, knead it on a lightly floured surface. Add glitter to make it sparkle!

When Life Gives You Kool-Aid, Make Play Dough!

You know what it's like when you take kids to the grocery store with you! Things are added to the cart and sometimes I just don't even notice until we get home. This week, Mike and I took 3 of the 5 kids with us to the grocery store for "a few" things. We scurried about the store in opposite directions gathering the items we needed in the most efficient way possible. Having three children along for the ride is not exactly ideal and the melt downs could occur at any moment. As we met at the check out line, I gathered the children and headed to the car while Mike unloaded the carts and checked out. Whew, we made it through with no problems! When we got home, I began unloading bags. What's this I found? Three packs of gum, a few bags of potato chips, and.....ten packs of Kool-Aid! We don't even drink Kool-Aid! You would think that Mike would know this by now! Oh well, I guess we'll have to make PLAY DOUGH!

Fruity Play Dough:
2 1/4 cups flour
1 cup salt
2 packs of Kool-Aid
4 Tbs. vegetable oil
1 cup water

Combine the flour, salt, and Kool-Aid in a large bowl. Stir in the oil and water until it becomes the consistency of bread dough. Knead the dough on a floured surface for a few minutes until it's firm. Enjoy!

Chocolate Playdough

My girls just love playing with playdough. For that reason, I usually make it at home. There are so many different recipes out there and it's fun to try them all. I recently came across this recipe for chocolate playdough and I thought it would be perfect to make for Valentine's Day! The aroma is heavenly! Although it is not edible, it is still fun! I plan to make a large batch for Felicia to share with her friends at preschool.

Here is the recipe:
1 1/4 cups flour
1/2 cup cocoa powder
1/2 cup salt
1/2 Tablespoon cream of Tartar
1/2 Tablespoon oil
1 1/2 cups water

Mix dry ingredients in a medium size saucepan. Add wet ingredients and stir together over low heat until a ball of dough forms. Remove playdough from the saucepan and knead by hand until dough is smooth and evenly colored. Store in an airtight container.
