Salt Dough Candy Canes

Every year, I like to make some hand made ornaments for our tree. As the kids get older, they love to reminisce about the times when we made these together. Our first ornaments for this year are Salt Dough Candy Canes.

What you need:
1 cup flour
2 cups salt
1 cup water
red food coloring
Combine flour and salt and slowly add the water. You may not need all of the water. I then separated the dough into two equal parts and colored one part with red food coloring.

Roll equal parts of dough onto 5-6 inch strips.

Then twist the two parts together.
Form the twist into a candy cane and place on a microwave safe plate. Microwave in 30 second intervals for a total of 2-3 minutes.
Allow the candy canes to cool and tie a piece of ribbon around the top. Hang from your Christmas tree:)

  1. This is cute! I did a similar post today on my kidz blog but with pull taffy. I have yet to try it yet, maybe I'll do my ornaments this way. The taffy is kind of scaring me cuz I've never made it before. I would definitely need my mom's help!

  2. I already wrote down and bought the ingredients for your homemade soft pretzels. Now I'm gonna take this one too!

  3. Very cute. I'll have to wait to make these with mine because I have no doubt that they would both only want to eat the salty dough!

  4. Awesome! I have been looking for the how to for these , I made them in Brownies and still hang them up every year.

  5. Thanks for the great idea! We made salt dough ornaments with cookie cutters but never thought of candy canes. Guess what we'll be doing tomorrow!

  6. Yum! I make those too - I can't wait to make them this year - kind of a pain...but nummy!

  7. great idea I think I will try this with my bunch

  8. Hi! I'm just new to your blog & *loved* this idea! We got to it & made some this afternoon & I blogged about it on my site: http://adventuresofamontessorimama.blogspot.com/2008/12/playdough-candy-canes.html mentioning *your* site. Thanks so much for the inspiration!
